About JIU-JITSU

Q

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

A

It is the same martial art. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is another name for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Q

What are the colors of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt?

A

There are basically five types of belts: white belt, blue belt, purple belt, brown belt, and black belt.

Q

What is the belt promotion system?

A

YAWAY JIU-JITSU ACADEMY does not conduct exams. The frequency of practice, understanding of techniques, and experience are comprehensively considered as criteria for promotion of the belt. Think of the daily practice as an exam.
On average, promotion to blue belt takes about a year to a year and a half. It is said that it takes 7 to 10 years to reach a black belt.

About Lesson

What is the difference between a private lesson and a group lesson?

A

Private lessons are one-on-one lesson with the instructor. You need to reserve the lesson in advance. it is recommended for those who have time to spare and those who want to get a better understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Group lessons are the lessons already scheduled and are divided in beginners, basic, others.
In group lessons you can spar with members of different levels.

A

This dojo is for the general public, but we also support those who aim to become professionals, so please contact us.

Q

Do I have to compete in competitions once I join the dojo?

A

No, you don’t have to compete ever. That is up to each individual. Some train to compete, but mostly train as a hobby or physical exercise.

About Physical

Q

Will I lose weight if I start to practive?

A

Of course there is. I wish I had taken before and after photos of some members.
The thing about jiu-jitsu is that not only it is a great form of exercise, once you get into it, naturally you start to want to get healthier, by watching what you eat. The Gracie diet is a good diet for those who really want to get into becoming an athlete.

Q

Can I practice even if I have an injury?

A

Injury risk is low in combat sports, but not zero.
If it’s not a serious injury, you can still practice by being mindful of the movements you should avoid. If you are injured, as soon as the pain disappears, please consult your doctor before resuming practice.

Q

Can you keep up with practice even if you are out of shape?

A

I teach and guide each person individually.
At YAWAY JIU-JITSU ACADEMY, you can practice at your own pace without overdoing it.
